2007 Design Awards
CALL FOR ENTRIES
You are invited to enter the 2007 Central Pennsylvania Excellence In Design Awards Program. Registered Architects and Intern/Associate Architects are highly encouraged to submit their best built and unbuilt work for review by a jury of peer architects. Eligible work includes architecture, interior architecture, historic preservation, adaptive reuse, renovation, and restoration projects as well as planning and urban design efforts. Built and unbuilt projects completed after January 2002 which have not received an award in their respective category by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the AIA are eligible. Awards may be given by the jury recognizing Honor, Merit and Citation levels of achievement.
Winners will be announced and all work celebrated at the Design Awards Gala at 5:30PM on Friday, October 19, 2007 in downtown York. Event details will follow.

FIRM ENTRY FORM
The Firm Entry Form must be completed and returned with the binder submissions. All submissions must be received no later than 5:00 P.M., Thursday, October 4, 2007 to be eligible for judging. Entry submissions shall be delivered to the offices of AIA Central Pennsylvania located at 208 North Third Street, Suite 400, Harrisburg, Pa. 17101.
PROJECT CREDIT FORM
Complete the Project Credit Form for each submission and place it in a sealed plain white envelope on the inside cover of the binder. All credits in publications will be based on this information. Any errors or omissions are the responsibility of the entrant. The project information envelope will not be opened until after the jury’s final selections have been made.
SEVEN DIGITAL IMAGES
Each entrant is required to submit at least seven digital images (slides) in JPG, TIF, or PDF format (640 x 480 resolution) for use in any awards presentation or publication of awards. Include these digital images with your Project Credit Form in the plain white envelope on CD. Each image must have title, project name, and firm and/or member name included on the border of the electronic slide. CDs will be retained by the Chapter for archival purposes.
GENERAL INFORMATION AND SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Each submission shall be presented in a binder with materials in 8.5" x 11" transparent sleeves.
All submissions must be completely anonymous. The firm name cannot appear on any part of the submission that goes to the jury. Reference to previous awards or project publications shall be considered reason for disqualification.
The entrant must receive permission from photographers and others whose copyrighted material is included. By making a submission, each entrant certifies that permission is granted to publish the submitted material.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Include the following information in no more than two pages (i.e.: both sides of one transparent sleeve).
- Name of Project
- Date project was completed.
- Key information such as program requirements, size, cost, site issues, etc.
- Brief explanation of project background and design concept.
- Brief descriptions of advancements in design made by the project such as technical, societal and environmental.
GRAPHIC INFORMATION
Photographs
You are required to submit high quality images, glossy or scanned prints, either black-and-white or color. Do not submit magazine reprints. Images photos and drawings must be able to fit 8.5" x 11" sleeve with a maximum of 10 sleeves. Captions or appropriate descriptions of each image need to be included with the following:
- One image showing each exposed side of the building or environment.
- One additional image showing the context of each exposed side of the building (may be omitted if the project’s relationship to its context is defined clearly in other prints).
- For a group of buildings, one image of the project sufficient to illustrate the complete project, including its relationship to its environs.
- For projects involving exterior alterations one image of each altered (exposed) side together with one image of the same side before alteration (unless evidence is submitted on the unavailability of the latter)
- One image showing context of interior.
- For interior projects, submit at least five photos (four interior photos and one exterior photo of the building in which the interior is located).
Drawings
Provide a site plan, at small scale, showing the project and its context. Also provide a floor plan or plans and one or more sections sufficient to explain the solution.
For interior projects provide floor plan(s) with furniture, fixture and lighting information and any other drawings necessary to explain fully the project’s use.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Each entry in the program is judged for the success with which the project has met its individual requirements. Entries are weighed individually, not in competition with each other. While all the submissions are judged together in one category, the submission requirements differ in order that the project can be shown in a manner that best describes it.
The judging criteria for Architecture/Interior submissions are as follows:
- Citations will be given for projects illustrating a high level of design conceptualization and implementation.
- Merit Awards may be given for projects illustrating a higher lever of design achievement.
- Honor Awards may be given for projects that exemplify the highest design quality at the Jury’s discretion.
The Jury for the 2007 AIA Central Pennsylvania Design Awards will consist of three to five architects whose practice is not based in Pennsylvania.
